Actually, private mercenary companies supporting regular armed forces has been common practice for most of a thousand years.
And many towns have privatized fire departments -- it works quite well depending on the situation. As for private police, what do you think mall security, airport security and most other private security companies are?
But all of those are different than health care in one fundamental respect. A private fire department has a strong incentive to put out the fires, because if they don't they are out of business. Loose the buildings, and you loose the contract.
A private health care company has no incentive to spend money to treat patients, because you're not going to run out of people who need health care. And yes, it puts profit and health at direct opposites -- which is exactly the problem.
As far as that particular movie, I haven't seen it. But I have personally seen thousands of instances where HMOs denied treatment solely because it would impact their profits.

Yes, Americans have been "dumbed down" since the Reagan years and it's been dropping ever since.
A lot of it is pure "laziness". The undereducated would rather be told what to think rather than actually taking the time to look it up. How else can you explain Bush being put in office twice?
Note: The southern states pretty well control who gets elected and for the most part they are the least educated. Don't get me wrong, I am not say they are all under educated, just that per capita, they are. They are also some of the laziest people I've ever dealt with. Just listen to the southern drawl....it's based on being too lazy to pronounce words correctly.
"yustacood", "y'all", "gitt'er done"
As far as Sicko, I haven't seen it but since it's a Michael Moore movie, I'll assume it's also got a bit of his own opinion mixed in with the facts and I'm also sure the "facts" he shows were hand picked to show the extreme situations. I'm not saying it's total BS, but you can't always show 2 sides of the story that counter balance everytime.

Is Michael Moore biased? yes. Is Sicko just BS? Hell NO! Sicko tells it like it is in this country and how corrupt the healthcare industry is in this country. We need a new healthcare system. Most Americans agree with MM on this issue. And, they agree that a Universal health care system is the answer. Sicko is the best movie MM has done so far. Anyone afraid of Universal health care really hasn't done their research or they work for the death profiteers in the heath insurance industry.
BTW, as far as having less a wait in the U.S than in countries with socialized medicine is a total and absolute myth. I've waited over 2 hours in the waiting room to see my doctor. The appointment was at 10:00 and I didn't get in til 12:30. And, it took forever for the doctor to eventually get to my room to see me. I had to wait 3 months to see a specialist after a referal. So, anyone who says there is a long waiting time in the U.K or Canada had better wake up to the fact that we have just as long waiting times. What's worse is that many people then get denied care in the U.S after all that wait. That is unheard of in countries with socialized medicine like France, the U.K and Canada.

God, I defended Sheehan today and now Michael Moore. EWW! I feel so dirty!!
Okay, Sicko is Moore's biased opinion. Flat out. I think most liberals would agree with this. It's a one sided, only good facts about socialised medicine and only all the bad facts of the American system put in.
But, the strength of this movie is it does bring up a valid argument. In America, yeah healthcare is expensive but we have great doctors. In the U.K. they have to import 33% of their doctors because many of the goods doctors don't want to work in the U.K. because they won't make as much money as they would in America and therefore they leave to go to other non socialised medicine countries.
So there is a benefit to having non socialised medicine in that we have better doctors with shorter lines. But on the other hand, those that can't afford health insurance can be put into a hard situation if their health fails.

find something the government has controlled that hasn't become a bloated program that has huge amounts of wasted money, time, and effort. social security was supposed to be a supplemental retirement system, and yet it has become the only means of income for retirees, the disabled, children under 21 who have lost a parent(under 25 if they are in college). medicare was only supposed to cost a few billion dollars at most, and now it is a bloated money wasting government program. now shall we look at countries with socialized government control of health care? France, Britain, Canada, Cuba, etc. all have very high tax rates to pay for health care, and health care dominates their budgets. yeah it is nice to get free health care, as long as you don't pay taxes, and don't need things done now. i was in the hospital earlier this year for about a month, and likely i would have either died, or been hospitalized several times for short periods if this country was on a socialized health care system.

It depends on what you want. In the Soviet Union it was cheaper to go to the emergency room to get a band aid than go to the store. In Europe doctor appointments and surgeries can take 6 or more months before they can do it. If you have cancer, you will probably die in Europe before they will be able to treat you. The same thing is happening in every place that has socialized medicine. Also note that countries that have socialized medicine have no military to speak of (the U.S. military is basically the baby sitter of Europe, Japan, South Korea and a host of other countries with socialized medicine) and have one or two times the tax rate of the U.S. If the U.S. were to pull out their military these countries would be forced to take money out of their socialized medine and put it in their military.
The U.S. does have a volunteer fire department in some cities and U.S. citizens can hire private security firms, detectives, bounty hunters and even arrest people themeslves refered to as a "citizen's arrest."

Sicko is not BS. It is, however, is made to emphasize the worst to make the message louder.
And, yes, Americans on average are unbelievably stupid. But it's not just that they received education barely appropriate for stone age, they are brainwashed by the profit-driven media to a point that the demagogory is given more credibility than their own eyes.

The answer is simple.
Most people don't know what to do to change this situation and our government has been bought by the powerful insurance lobbies!!
Most of the people in the government are wealthy and if their personal insurance doesn't cover the cost they can usually afford the care out of pocket!!
When politicians get sick you usually hear big named hospitals and doctors involved in their care!!
There is a major disconnect in our government officials in doing what is right for the country and it's citizens and what benefits the Elite!
Michael Moore is the messenger ...we have a long history of persecuting the messenger to silence the message!!

The Canadian socialized healthcare system is a failure. How else to explain the hundreds of new illegal clinics sprouting up and the influx of Canadians coming into the USA for care? The average wait to see a specialist after a primary doctor visit is 4 months. 4 months! Counterfeit drugs are everywhere and the best doctors have left for the USA.

Please do no longer take something that guy tells you too heavily. He has his own schedule. he's in fact out to tutor my loved usa right into a socialist haven. on an identical time as Cuba and numerous international locations around the globe have government funded healthcare, it truly is lots from loose. no longer something is loose, notably some thing as high priced as healthcare. i've got self assurance it truly is in Sweden, the place in addition they have government funded insurance, just about 50% of human beings's earnings is taxed to grant that "loose" healthcare. So think of earning $50,000 in a 300 and sixty 5 days and $25,000 of this is right now taken from you to grant somebody else's well being costs. And once you do have this way of device that enables the government to mandate your well being and different aspects of your existence, it enables them to regulate you in different procedures. So whilst they decide it is going to become too high priced to maintain, they start forcing you to do issues you won't want to do. they could tension you to end ingesting undesirable meals, workout, keeping specific tiers of well being which you will no longer want to do. on an identical time as those issues are good, it truly is not any longer the governement's interest to tell you the variety to safeguard your self. additionally, as quickly as we enable those issues to be controlled via government, they alter into VERY inefficient and somewhat greater high priced to function. supplies exchange into limited because of the fact there is not any opposition. look at Canada and great Britain. they have it and a few human beings can actually wait over a 300 and sixty 5 days just to have a enamel pulled. it truly is authentic some thing must be performed approximately our healthcare subject, yet government isn't the answer. numerous the time it truly is the subject. the excellent answer is to open up the loose marketplace and permit human beings to purchase well being insurance from their chosen service. The greater competiton there is, the decrease the fees, greater proper the insurance and fairer it truly is.
