Does your motor already have sludge in it? If so run the motor till its hot on the highway pick and up two things.
#1 A quart of CRC crankcase cleaner.
#2. One quart of Rislone.

When you get home shut the motor off and dump the entire quart of CRC cleaner in the oil fill. Turn on the motor and let it idol for 1/2 hr. Do not drive the car during this period of time.
Drain the oil for at least an hour and change the filter.
If your system holds 5 or 4 quarts substitute one of the quarts with the quart of Rislone (high detergent cleaner).
I strongly recommend the new Havoline oil to replenish the leval to the proper fill line. Run the car for 3,000 miles and repeat everything if it's still sludge city inside the valve covers.

If your motor's presently clean inside I lean on Havoline (Texas) and Brad Penn ( Pennsylvania oil). Both clean very well.

All of the major brands are good - the most important thing is regular oil changes.

I generally go about 4-5K miles on an oil change - and change the oil filter every single time.

Synthetics can actually go longer than that (and the only reason they suggest changing it more often is to make more money off of suckers). You could probably go 8-9K with synthetic, but you should still change the filter around 4-5K.

I would think that all of the name brand synthetic oils will prevent sludge. good luck.

All are mostly the same. Just change it often according to the owners manual; that is the best protection.
