one meter has 100 centimerters (centi means 1/100; therefore there are 100 of such 'centis" in a meter).
one inch has 2.54 centimeters.
therefore, a meter will have this many inches:
100 centimeters/2.54 centimeters = 39.37 inches.
Therefore, a meter is longer because it has 39.37 inches, compared to your 36 inches.
