i need a spare key for my VW 99 beetle... does anyone know how much that would cost?

If you're talking about the laser cut keys, they aren't cheap.
From the dealership they run about $100. If it's one of those switch blade type keys, you'll need to get it programmed as well. You can do it yourself, instructions can be found on line. If you pay the dealership, they'll charge you another $60

It depends on whether or not your car has electronic anti-theft.

If it is just a key, then you can probably get a copy made anywhere.

If it needs a microchip in it to work with your anti-theft system, then you might have to order it from VW.

Check with VW to find out what they suggest - and then check with a local locksmith or key making place and see what they tell you.
