Cuba has the sanctions in place because of the large Cuban-American population in south Florida. if it was not for them, Pubs would have no chance of taking the southern part of the state which has the largest voting block.
The embargo was enacted after the Castro regime confiscated the properties of United States citizens Feb 1962,
Any talk of easing the embargo is vigorously decried in Congress especially by Castro's ex inlaw the Diaz-Balarts.
The US has no one to thank but it own arrogance for the communist influence that exists in Cuba, in spite of what Cubanazos in Miami love to spout.
Castro was sworn in as Prime Minister of Cuba Feb 1959
Friction with the U.S. developed as the new government began expropriating property owned by major U.S. corporations, such as United Fruit and announced plans to base the compensation on the artificially low property valuations that the companies themselves had kept to a fraction of their true value so that their taxes would be negligible if not nonexistent(this is what ticked off the companies the most, getting called on their sneaky tactics)
Between 15 April and 26 April, 1959 Castro and a delegation of industrial and international representatives visited the U.S. as guests of the Press Club. Castro hired one of the best public relations firms in the United States for a charm offensive visit by Castro and his recently initiated government. He was refused a meeting with President Eisenhower. Rebuffed, he soon joined forces with the Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev who was looking to gain a foothold in the western hemisphere.

Nice China bashing. So if you're the international role model I guess something significant has just been done to help native americans recently? Perhaps you've improved conditions in the urban ghettoes? How about your health system, can a guy with limited resources get surgery easily?and the couple of middle eastern countries being policed by your armed forces....did their citizens vote you in? If you knew anything about modern China you would know that calling them communist in the old sense of the word is a joke, and that they are a lot friendlier towards your country than you are to theirs. Human rights, what a joke. That includes the right for the Klu KluxKlan to exist and for every man and his dog to own a gun. I can walk through any Chinese city at night without getting "wasted" in a "drive by". As for Cuba, arent you done yet economically beating up on a little guy? More than 20 state of the art aircraft carrier groups versus what...some patrol boats, The soviet navy is now a ghost, I think youre safe already. and what commodity are you really stopping? other than a few pineapples and cigars?

Hypocrisy. Plain and simple. China has the means of waging war with us cuba does not.
I would support blockading China for 3 reasons. 1. Their human rights violations and 2. Their unfair trade practices. 3. They're already trying to poison us.

The answer in cynical, but true. Money. The world's most powerful economy is not going to get sanctioned by any country that wants to prosper. Also, people hate Castro. That is the reason we still have the embargo on Cuba. Yes, he is guilty of human rights violations, but nothing that other world leaders couldn't be accused of.

Reading some of these answers is making me sick.
Here's the rundown, Castro led a revolt and was allies with America. He turned on us, simple version of long story, and turned Cuba into a communist country. Then Russia started sending nuclear missle to Cuba leading to the Cuban Missle Crisis. Embargoes were set up to punish Castro and try to make him change sides, basically.
Now the embargo is still in place due to the surprisingly strong amount of political weight Cuban refugees and Cuban Citizens in Florida and other parts of the country hold. They don't want the embargo lifted so no president has risked their political furtures by lifting it.
With China, I believe we had an embargo on them after the communist revolution, but that was lifted after Nixon traveled to China and began relations with the communist regime. I'm from Florida so I know about the Cuban embargo, it's part of our history, but I'm not so well informed on the China part. Hope that helps.

Because American corporations will deal with the devil to make a profit. And China has about the most miserable human rights record of any country we do business with. As long as the American consumer get his/her cheap manufactured goods nothing is going to get done.

Because China is too big a trading partner for us to ever complain about. If Cuba had a huge industrial base and was able to send billions of dollars of product to the US, there'd be no embargo.
