You are mentioning many diff things...

If you need to upgrade a modem, you can simply buy a new one. Be sure to match the type, internal or external and the connectors (PCI, serial or etc....)

Now, if you are trying to connect the two computer to one modem, then you may want to consider a wireless router for your modem. (If the modem is external) The router would go between the modem and the computers. You would also need a wireless LAN card for the furthest computer.

Most wireless routers have both wired and wireless, so the closest computer can be hardwired in. THIS computer may need a LAN card if it does not already have one.

Hope this helps.

The 4100 Speedstream modem is a DSL modem. It brings the Internet feed into your location.

What you really want to do is to have more than 1 pc access the Internet feed. This is what a router does.

You connect the modem's feed into the router's WAN port.

PCS on the LAN plug into LAN ports on the router or into a wired Network switch and you end up with what you are seeking.

An alternative to running wired lines throughout is a wireless access point or wireless router. A wireless unit communicates between the wireless access point and the pcs via unlicensed radio frequencies and wires need not be run throughout the house. Wireless has its problems however. Security is an issue and you need to be very tight on the security configuration. Further, wireless is blocked by masonry, metal (e.g. ducts in walls), and silver back mirrors among other things.

Anyway, the modem is not the issue. You need a router.

Most routers have a manual that explains what to do to configure. If you have questions, write with specific questions as a new question.

Is the 4100 a DSL modem? A cable modem?

What are you trying to do? Are you trying to tie both computers into the modem so they can share what the modem is connected to?
