Why is it when you buy a refrigerator the electrical chord is already on the unit and ready to plug in but on dishwashers or even clothes dryers they don't come with it and you have to wire it on the unit before installing it?

Your fridge runs on normal 110 volt power. Your dryer and dishwasher run on 220 volts and that is often hard wired into your wall because of the amount of amperage these appliances draw.

Usually 220V appliances come without the cord. I think that they are just being cheap, because the different cords have only been around for a few years. The old ones were pretty
standard and its silly for the home owner to have to put his own on. None should be hardwired. Makes it a pain to work on it or to replace it.

Some dishwashers come with a cord while others are made to be hardwired. Dryers can have more than one type of electrical connection so they sell the cords seperate (I agree that the cost should be included with purchase).

Most of the appliances that you mentioned have to be hardwired or the power cable plug have to match what you have at available at home. They also required to be installed by a qualified person. On these items, the manufacturers prefer to let the installers match and buy the required cord.

It depends on the configuration of the outlet in the home the appliance is going to. There are several different styles and you need to know which is in your home so that the right cord comes with the appliance.
