I'm not taking either side here, but I don't recall this to be the case 25 years ago.

I think it's safe to say that MOST people with liberal viewpoints tend to support the democrats, and MOST people with conservative viewpoints tend to support the republicans. Not all, but most. This doesn't take into account third party affiliations, but they're a small enough percentage of the electorate as to be insignificant to this question. The democrats generally support a platform of social freedom (gay marriage, legalized drugs, abortion) coupled with economic regulation (social welfare, heavy industrial regulation). These are liberal beliefs. The republicans generally favor economic freedom (lassiz fare economics, no social welfare, free trade) coupled with social regulation (no gay marriage, no abortion, citizen surveilance), which are conservative beliefs. So usually the liberal beliefs line up with democratic policies, and conservative beliefs line up with republican policies. Not always, but enough to make it a good rule of thumb.

Well, when it comes to big, intrusive, government and high taxes, the Democrats and Republicans are the same. Both those parties are socialist and liberal. Real conservatives are duped by the Republicans and the commies are stuck with the Democrats. And the country suffers because we the people are not smart enough to limit government to the small one we were given by the founders.

I do not, but many people do.

25 Years ago, Republicans were mostly Fiscal Conservatives, and Democrats were mostly Liberals.

Today, Republicans are split between Fiscal Conservatives and Neo-Conservatives (ex-Democrats with a conservative social agenda but a liberal fiscal agenda).

I am a Conservative and I pledge allegiance to NO party. In most cases, a Dem is a lib and a Con is a Repub.

But some liberals and conservatives don't affiliate themselves with any particular party.

I try not to see the world of politics in only black and white. I am a left leaning registered American Independent. Most on this forum, though, see me as a flaming liberal, no matter how many times I try to set them straight.
