The 13th Amendment to the Constitution declared that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude...shall exist within the United States." Formally abolishing slavery in the United States, the 13th Amendment was passed by the Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified by the states on December 6, 1865.

In the United States, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves in the rebellious Southern states. The Proclamation legally freed 3.5 million slaves. The border states were not in rebellion and therefore the Emancipation Proclamation could not apply to them because it was issued under Lincoln’s powers as Commander in Chief.

The Northern states had either previously abolished slavery or had never had the institution. The 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolished slavery throughout the United States. The 13th Amendment was proposed in January 1865 and was ratified in December 1865.

If you are asking about the United States, the US congress, following President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, and the Civil War, freed the slaves in an amendment to the Constitution. But slavery is not "abolished;" there is slavery all over the world, still, some legal and some illegal.

The north and the south fought over slavery during the Civil War. The north was for abolishing slavery, but the south wanted to keep on doing slavery. Since the north won they abolished slavery all together.

Slavery has been abolished many times in different countries. The British did it by an act of Parliament while slavery continued to be legal in the United States for many years. In the U.S., slavery was abolished by Abraham Lincoln in the Emancipation Proclamation. In Haiti, slavery was abolished by violent uprising by the slaves, led in part by Toussaint L'Ouverture who was himself a slave.

Slavery still exists here and there in the world, in places such as Sudan, and of course happens all over the world with women and children who are trafficked as slaves for sex.

I f you're talking about the U.S, remember that Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in the states that had seceded from the union. He did not include the border states that had not left the union. Slavery was abolished in the U.S by the 13th amendment to the Constitution on December 8th, 1865. 27 of 36 states ratified at that time giving the needed majority. The last state to ratify the amendment was Mississippi in 1995.

Slavery in the United States was abolished with Abraham Lincoln's "Emancipation Proclamation". Freedom was not fully attained until the 13th Amendment was ratified.

Where? In the US? If so, there was no one person who abolished it (this is true for pretty much anywhere, I suppose...) Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, but it wasn't an individual effort, rather the culmination of several years of political, social and economic changes.

Coolhandven. If you do something wrong long enough it finally invades your consciousness, if you make any progress in you thinking on anything at all. Maybe when your greed is satisfied, if greed's not a bottomless pit. They say our view of life is insane, so maybe it comes with flashes of sanity.
