Caucasians / whites have an advantage in life?

Question

In my Sociology class we were talkin about races and stuff and my professor said that Caucasian people have a distinct advantage in every aspect of their life in the United States. She is a Caucasian herself and she said "Especially in the dating world and the nightlife...they are the superior ones"

I couldn't exactly comprehend what she meant

Most of my classmates seemed to agree (about 23 outta 30 of us thru a show of hands by her statement)

IS that somewhat true? How??

caucasians DO have advantages due to lack of discrimination etc. but the stuff about dating/nightlife makes no sense
some people like to blame everything on discrimination, like when shanaynay says "my babydaddy don't pay no child support cause he with a white girl...RACIST!" when the real problem is that discrimination has forced shanaynay to live in the ghetto surrounded by poverty and cut off from opportunity her whole life and not get an education because her people are not enabled to fight for the funding needed for schools.

don't let the conservative mob try to tell you discrimination doesn't exist or that liberals control the media. just look at fox news and the wall street journal. most media outlets are controlled by the neoconservative rich and their henchmen

THE USA was originally a white nation, made by whites, so naturally, if you are white, you''ll have an upperhand. It's all good though, it's jsut how things are geared towards a certain people. wouldnt you expect an Asian light skinned man to have an upperhand in life over in Asia?

I dont know about dating though? Maybe she is talking about in terms of dating and attractiveness. In Western societies, small Nordic feautres are sene to be the most beautiful so everyone who has grown up here believes this. The more whiter you appear, the better looking you are. If you are white and have these features, then you're at an upperhand. People get surgery to fit into this type to appear more attractive, even other white people. Maybe that is what she meant?

edit: to the guy above me..white people have a disadvantage becuase WE CANT HAVE CUTLURE CLUBS???? And it's a disadvantage to be white because we can't say the n word in public which we made up to put blacks down without being called a racist? lol if that's the worse thing you can come up with, then it really isn't a disadvantage to be white, is it.

(I'm Canadian so I'm going to speak through caucasians in Canada, not America) I think maybe the textbook is a bit outdated. a few years ago I would've agreed with you. But I think whites are definetly becoming (if not already...) the minority. I don't think we have a huge advantage over others in the dating game, because I'm sure theres others like me; I'm caucasians yet I prefer darker, 'latino' types...so 'white boys' in my book don't have the advantage. Also, jobs, more and more 'coloured' folk are being offered and given top jobs out there over white people. I know in Toronto (the city) if you wanted to be a cop and you were white, tough luck. Doctors, pharmacist jobs are mostly given to middle eastern nationalies. Even the sports world, I think whites are at a huge disadvantage. (except in hockey...)

All things being equal, Caucasians/Whites absolutely have an advantage in life.

This is not only true in the "dating world" but also in every other aspect of daily life. Although I don't agree with her comment "superior ones."

Teachers have the responsibility to challenge you mentally. She sounds like a great teacher.

I would say that we have an advantage in society in general because of preconceived notions about minorities, although from my standpoint things are getting better. As far as having an advantage in the dating and nightlife circle I would disagree. It can be said that there are more Caucasians than any other segment of society, but that doesn't mean that we only stick to our own people.

I agree with the first poster; some of these professors have a liberal bias.

As a caucasian, if you put it, I really never felt advantaged over anyone of a different race. I've been passed over for lots of things by people of different backgrounds.

well, i think that people have different opinions depending on their experiences. I don't know that there is an absolute truth to your question. There are many factors that affect success in dating and nightlife, color is just one of them so it's really hard to isolate one factor and determine if it's making all the difference. I am black and i routinely date white men. I have never had any problems getting dates or their attention. I don't think my dark skin helps me but it doesn't define me so it doesn't hinder my dating and nightlife

PS: I don't see how this is a liberal bias.
