you should be using a sae30w detergent motor oil, most walk-behind mowers with a briggs or tecumseh engine use 20 oz of oil when the crankcase is empty. do not over fill, very important, check your dipstick for proper oil level, and overfilling the crankcase will cause a perfectly good engine to blow out blue smoke, it does not mean the engine is shot although it could be. also make sure your air cleaner is not oil fouled as this can also cause smoking

Not most small engines specify 30 weight non degrent motor oil. the light oil will seep past your oil ring and compression rings. First poster was right about over filling it when changing oil been there done that lots of times when in a hurry then had to stop drain it and do it all over again making double the work.
Plus another little tid bit about oil in engines. You over fill them and it will cause to oil to foam up not good for the engine at all. And it does not take but just a little over filled to cause it to foam either. Although oil not as bad now about doing that it still happens and will ruin an engine quick when it happens. It is just liking running the engine with no oil at all.

I would say no you either have bad rings/valves or when you changed your oil you over filled it.
These are two common causes.
You should really use 30 wt. oil for hot summer use and the lighter stuff during colder weather for your snowblower and such equipt.

If yer mower is belching blue smoke, it don't matter what oil you put in it - the engine is shot.
