I've heard people say no because of affirmative action, well fare, and stuff like that. My opinion is that affirmative action is necessary. Honestly, if big companies didn't have to hire minorities, do you think they would? It's not really racism but the mentality that's been developed in America. An example is the word "minority". I'm black and I KNOW that things like gangs (even though we didn't START it originally), current day rap, along with other things give people a mentality that the WHOLE ethnic group behaves that way and it's not the case but, if you look at the opposite perspective can you really blame them?
I have friends who are Mexican that have trouble getting jobs because of America's mind set on "oh your Mexican so you must be here illegally..." but that's another story.
I agree with your teacher because big companies and up into our government, are run mostly by Caucasians and it's nothing close to an equal divide (government) considering that America is made up of so many different people. Because of this when it comes to making choices for the United States it is mostly based on one view point and will be made to satisfy the "majority" (re-election and stuff like that). These choices eventually affect everyday things.

I will attempt to be very brief and uneducated in my response.
This was a British Colony. Then it was a haven for N. Europeans. Followed by Italians, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese. The last 3 coming to the west coast in the Gold Rush time frame.
They all came because it SUCKED at home, wherever home was.
With the exception of China all those places are in much better shape than when my Norwegian decedents came here in the 1880's. Those had been preceded by Germans, Irish, French in the late 1700's and early 1800's so on Dads' side I am an American Mutt.
All those cultures melted into pretty much what we see today.
Current immigration is from other parts of the world, Mostly from our south and east. Again because it SUCKS. As those people become the majority they will have the so called advantage.
This experiment in Freedom will only fail if those new waves replicate the same crap that made their countries of origin SUCK.

OMG --- your teacher has got to be kidding right? I think your classmates must have agreed with the teacher just for extra points!
Come on --- look around you, that statement is so far from the truth it is pathetic! I will give you an example -- you have two people applying for the same job, one Caucasian - one hmm well let's just say of color (meaning Asian, African American, Mexican - whatever). Both very qualified for the job but the Caucasian has more experience in the field. They both do equally as well in the interview process. Who do you think will get hired? Not the Caucasian for the mere fact that it looks better for the company to hire "a so called minority". In fact, there are some companies that have to meet a "quota" in the minority category for new hires.
Another instance: take the same 2 people who have been out of work for quite some time and they go apply for welfare --- the Caucasian is going to have a real tough time getting any of those benefits.
Interesting your teacher asks about the situation in a dating scenerio? hmmm, let's think about that one. Caucasian women in the nightlife scene are a dime a dozen! Too easy to please sort of thing. I think women of other races are a little more selective when it comes to their dates (stricter rules to live by at home so I think have better morals imbedded growing up).

This is something I've heard over and over and I'm really sick of it. It's called white privilige and supposedly everyone who is white is advantaged simply because of skin colour, and everyone who is not white is, therefore, disadvantaged. The way I see it, if everyone wants to go around being victims, more power to them, but I know from my own experience that this is a gross generalization that is perpetuated by people in academia who have no concept of what the "real world" is like. Stanley Fish wrote an article called "unpacking the invisible napsack" which explains that only white people can be racist, and only white people are racist by virtue of their privilege. If that, in and of itself, is not a racist statement, I don't know what is. I do know that the only street people I see in the big smoke, Toronto, are white or native. What does that say? They're privileged? I think not. Perpetuating this kind of crap creates an us/them mentality which makes non-white groups feel justified in, say, bombing people. This type of "education" drives me nuts--I have 6 years post-secondary, and had to listen to this garbage too. When your professors come up with real statistics that are relevant to the world today, maybe they'd have some credibility. I'm not saying that historically it hasn't been the case that white people had an advantage, but we are in 2007 and I think these people should stop spewing this rhetoric and do some new studies on how untrue this "fact" is. But, your professor should be happy to know that "white" people--what the hell does that mean, anyway?--will be non existent in the not-too-distant future; I'd be curious to know who will be superior/inferior then.
Your classmates haven't got a clue. Tell them to get into the real world and see the discrimination they face as white folks. Trust me, that is very real: just recently, my friend (who is Black) wanted me to work on a project to help single mothers in an area of Toronto (I have the experience and credentials). Her boss (everyone who works there is Black) said he didn't want any white people involved. My friend said, well, what do we do, then, if a white single mother comes in? Kick her out? My friend and I had many battles over white privilege, and she has now come to the conclusion that it is a fallacy. She's seen how I've been treated as a white person within the Black community, and trust me, intolerance is not the exclusive domain of white folks.

No i do no longer agree. If something, right this moment given our governments choose in the direction of "minorities", White adult males specially have a downside, or truly, Poverty Born white adult males. What truly provides anybody an income is how nicely they play the activity of fulfillment. and it in order that happens that there are greater white adult adult males that are taught the thank you to play this activity then different races and genders. so its no longer that different races or genders have a downside, its purely that the cultures that the final public of those races and genders are born into, are not in that social "zone" of fulfillment, and that hinders their ability to learn the keys to fulfillment. So its no longer their Race thats at a downside, its purely their place at start , their unlucky tide of destiny that places them at a downside. yet what provides different races and genders a well known-day income is that our government provides favors and investment to companies that hire them and help them get a head start up, and thats the place the genuine racism starts off, reason deep interior, all those companies carry a a threat resentment of them for that reason. So I blame this fake sense of sympathy. no you may desire to inspect Race as a ability to dish out favors for sympathy, yet truly their social status at start, thats their genuine project. Or we could purely manage each and every physique as equivalent and supply each and every physique an equivalent scuffling with possibility.

The predominant power of America has been Caucasian for over 200 years. thus the service orientation is toward the cultural development, cultivated by that power. acknowledgment of other cultural tendencies and attributes has only had since the 60's to develop, and that under resistance from fear, ignorance and greed. (no offense, I am Caucasian "Irish-American") Fear due to what was viewed as offensive comparative morality, Ignorance due to a lack of cultural knowledge, and greed due to a desire to maintain the status quo.

Nobody should have advantage over others based on their color, or any other thing that is out of their hand..
and when this happens, it's certainly wrong, and will lead to bad consequences..
