Well, there are a bunch of reasons.
Some people are so blinded by their religion that they can't see that Harry's world is MAKE-BELIEVE. They say they don't want their kids watching movies or reading books about witches and wizards because, according to the Bible, they're evil and are associated with the devil. It's not true, of course, but some people just don't want their kids to have an imagination, I guess.
Then there are the people who think Harry's adventures are only for kids which is about as far from the truth as you can get. Especially considering these movies are rated PG-13 with the final movie expected to have an R rating! Personally, I'm 21 and I'm a huge Harry Potter fan! So is my mother at age 49! My brother as well at age 11!
Also, the stories can get a little over-played. I love the POTC series as well but I did get a little burned out at the previews every few minutes on TV.
I've noticed a lot of guys don't like Harry Potter. I'm not too sure what the reason for that one is. Just about every guy I know thinks the movies are "stupid" and aren't entertaining... I don't know.
Either way, I guess it all comes down to free will.

Traditionally religious my ***!
Harry Potter books are very lengthy and quite boring. But i do really enjoy the movies.
What annoys me about them though is the 'stereotpical' Englishness which is so wrong.
American's perceive Brits as all la-dee-da tea drinkers or evil baddies which couldn't be further from the truth.
Also for films aimed at kids, the overuse of 'bugger' 'bloody' and '****' show how immature JK Rowling is in her writing.
And for the record, i am Scottish. (yea yea, och aye jock and all that)

I think some people are incapable of appreciating anything that is too popular. My second husband was like that. He would be against it just because so many other people were in favor of it. He wouldn't see a movie if it was too popular, even if friends he trusted told him they believed he would like it. It was his concept of individuality, I guess. I thought it was just stubbornness.
There are also people who disapprove of it, mostly on religious grounds. And there are also snobs who assume they would not like it (or they would be ashamed to find they did) because it is "written for children." HA!!! It was not written for children; it was written for all ages.
