Ok, my betta is about three years old (yes I know he is very old) Anyway - all day he lays on his side at the bottom of the tank - his left gill is inflamed (it always has been) I have tried everything, but I don't know what to do. He still eats fine - Just wanted to know if there was anything I could do to help him

You seem to have taken good care of your betta already. I'd just suggest that you should make sure his water is warm enough (76-84o, I keep mine 76-80o) and if he's having trouble swimming to the top, maybe you could lower the water level a bit so he doesn't have as far to swim to breathe or eat. In the off chance that this is because of a swim bladder problem, try giving him a bit of a cooked pea with the skin removed. This adds a little fiber to their diet - I give this to mine in place of one meal about once each week.

Your betta is sick.

It could be due to nitrate poisoning, and possibly bacterial infections, or even a defective gill (if it was born that way).

Try this. Do a full jar water change every third day. Every time you change water, add antibiotic (Pick one that treats inflamed gills, like Ampicillin for example) to the water.

Sounds like he is infected. Are you changing the water enough and adding purifiers. The water you use makes a difference. Could be ick. Or old age.
