What are some other top brand tools?

Snap On tools are very expensive. So are Mac tools. If you work at a garage or a dealership there may be a Snap On or Mac rep that visits the shop once a week. If you are a seasoned guy and are working on flat rate and require the special tools to get a tough job done quickly then go ahead and spend a little extra money.

If you do not fit into this category or a "shadetree" mechanic then I say save your pennies. There are plenty of other quality tool manufacturers around that won't put you into the poor house. Craftsman pro line is very good now and costs much less than the big guys. SK makes quality stuff too and is probably sold at your local parts store. Lisle and OTC make many of the specialty tools that you'll come across.

I do recommend staying away from any of the "Made in China" brands unless you don't value your knuckles (they break, stretch, round out etc).

If it's air tools your inquiring about then the answer is similar. Snap On and Mac are too expensive for the quality that you get, but the rep is always near so when it does break it's only a phone call away. Craftsman is ok, but the recomendation here is to stick with Ingersol Rand (IR), good stuff, good prices.

Good luck!

i was an aircraft mechanic for 5 years and am now a maintenance mechanic at a large plant and i have broken the cheapo tools and the top brand tools. snap-on and mac are both great but expensive the cheep (made in china) tools are not well made. craftsman pro is good quality and you can walk into any sears in the country and get a replacement. some times you just don't have time to send tools off for repairs or to wait for the tool truck to show up.

My Dad was a dealer for both Snap-On tools and Mac tools both are very good quality and all of his customers that he would sell too thought that they both worked equally well, they are expensive but if you do plan on using then it is a very good investment because i have some of his tools sitting in my garage, all of them are at least 15 yrs old and still work as if they were just purchased yesterday so if you plan on using them i recommend snap on or mac tools but if you are going to use them for one project or even just a few little projects a brand at sears will do the job for less money but keep in mind they aren't as good quality

Snapon are excellent tools, but they are horribly expensive. If you make your living with tools, then I would suggest you buy Snapon. If you just want a decent set of tools for your own auto maintenance, then go to Sears and buy Craftsman tools. Kobalt tools from Lowe's are also good. Both have a lifetime guarantee. Both brands are very good quality and cost a lot less than Snapon. My son is a diesel mechanic and owns about $12k worth of Snapon tools. For him, it makes sense, for the average DIYer it doesn't.

I used to like Husky tools, but try getting a replacement socket when the Home Depot doesn't stock them anymore. I have 2 or 3 Husky sets that are incomplete because the stores don't stock the individual sockets I need.

Myself I prefer Craftsman, between the warranty (Snap on's is similar) and the innovative tools they come up with, they are my choice. And since they are at Sears when one does break it is an easy replacement, if they do not have that exact tool they replace with a better one. Never questioned when replacing (the very few times I needed to) Just happy with the tools, the warranty, and the no hassle replacement.

The quality of Sears tools has gone DOWN a lot the last few years. Lifetime warranty - yes, but what good it it when you live 30 miles from Sears and a deep-well socket splits up the side the first time you use it? (yes, that has happened to me)

I have been getting more Husky tools - they are much better quality.

Snap on tools are great and i have a lot of them depending on what your working on, however, you can go to sears and get their prof. grade tools that are at least half the price and are pretty much the same tool. also if it breaks you can return it and you don't have to wait on a snap on truck to come around. For now on i only go snap on if sears doesn't have it.

Craftsman tools (purchased from Sears) have a lifetime warranty. If one ever breaks, take it back and get a new one. They may be a bit cheaper than snap on. Compare prices.

Snap on are awesome but expensive. Craftsman are good but also expensive and i have noticed a decline in value from them over the years. Northern tools has the same thing as craftsman but are a ton cheaper. Same lifetime warranty and everything.

In my opinion, snap on is well worth it. They are a little pricey, but the quality is good. You get what you pay for. Snap on is all I bought when I got started working on cars for a living. I also got Matco which is very good to, a little cheaper than snap on. Got craftsman also, excellent warranty. But over thr years their quality has gone down. Snap on also has a lifetime warranty, at least the dealer I dealt with.
