As an Aussie living in the US, I can honestly say that the quality of lifestyle is better in NSW. Of course this depends to where you are from in America, but yes, most definitely, it is a very safe country to raise your children. As far as housing goes, well...Americans are a little spoiled, particularly in the suburbs, when it comes to the general size of a house and the rooms inside it. Honestly, you may get a bit of a culture shock moving to Australia, particularly if you haven't been there before, but once you get past that- there isn't any other place in the world you'd rather be.

Australia is a very safe place to raise kids. For a start hardly anyone has a gun. Education in Australia is first rate - we have more Nobel Prizes per capita than any other country. People are paid a decent wage for their work which means tipping is not part of the culture. You tip for exceptional service but not for someone just doing their job - and that applies to taxi drivers too.

I recommend you read Bill Bryson's book "Down Under" for an American's view of Australia.

I live in Sydney. The suburbs are great and the air is always clean. The shopping is different depending on where you're living. I live on the North Shore and the schools are certainly a bit different to American schools. At most schools there aren't cafeteria's and there are canteens instead. The kids usually eat outside on the ground or under cover instead of inside. Accademically I'm afraid I'm not sure of the difference but at my old primary school I had great teachers and I always got top grades. I hope you and your kids enjoy Sydney!!
