To be honest you need to do do a lot more research than just asking a question here. Most of these cars are going to be at least 30 years old. They were not built to last and , unless you find one that has been totally rebuilt or cosseted and never taken out in wet weather there could be serious rust issues. The design dates from 1959 when the first Mini was introduced so the engines and gearboxes do not last much beyond 50,000 miles before needing a rebuild. Be aware that there are cars out there which are just basic Minis which have been modified and are not genuine Coopers - as these are now collectors items and getting expensive. As for being "good" you need to define what "good" is for you. You focus on economy - they do about 30-35 per gallon and so if you fill up on a Monday (from memory the tank takes about 6 gallons/ 30 litres then you will get about 200 miles before the next fill. Again, due to the age of the design they do not protect their occupants well in a crash. In summary, they are great as a hobby - but not a good idea as an everyday car. You will spend quite a lot on repairs, parts can be reasonable but unless you can do the work yourself then the labour bills will not be. Finally, if you are a new, young driver then you may find insurance to be a problem.

The original mini cooper came with 1000cc engines.
now you can find many different types.
The mini cooper with metro engine 1300cc is 80bhp
The austin mini 1275GT (1300cc)racing car.. 80bhp.
I have enhanced the 1275 gt to 100bhp.
I own both above cars 1975models and in running condition.
Basically the Gt gear box has a better ratio then the coopers.
I have seen people installing Honda prelude engines in mini cars.
I like to maintain original parts for all my cars
basically I am car collector and have many of them in my collection.and in running condition.

They had motors ranging from 750cc to 1300cc. power was just in the "horribly low" range. the 1300ccs were prob around 55 hp. The 750s, aroudn 35 prob.
That being said, theres a company called minitec that does honda B16 motor swaps into the old minis which gives them close to 200 hp on 1300ish pounds. Theyre just sillyfast.
