In Europe, it's a social/cultural thing for teens to drink. Most there don't care that much about it because it's normal, not forbidden. Kids there don't abuse themselves as much as they do in America. It's the whole "I want to because I'm not allowed to" mindset. Don't fall victim to this. The most important thing for someone who is 16 or 17 is focusing on education. That's how you get somewhere in life. Deciding to drink at an early age can lead to very bad consequences. My uncle because a full blown alcoholic (physically addicted) at 15 yr old. He's dead now. Died of Liver Cancer (which was down to only 30% function due to cirrhosis - before the cancer set in) at the age of 50 yrs old. Not a very long life. Not a happy one either. I've never heard anyone say, "Boy! I'm sure glad I started drinking in high school!" but I've heard a lot of adults happy about the good choices they've made and the success it brought them.
Medically, it's not advisable because you're still growing, chances are. When you drink alcohol, the alcohol is traveling in your bloodstream - so it can affect all the parts of your body, down to the cellular level. If you really stop and think about how and what your body needs to work to be healthy, you wouldn't think twice about putting anything bad in you.
When you are an adult, a glass of wine once in a while can be a healthy thing. Wine is enjoyable and enhances the flavor of foods. Wines have flavanoids and antioxidants - super! It's only healthy when you have 1 glass though and not on a daily basis. Moderation is a good way to do it.
Be smart - don't start drinking before you have everything else like your education, your career, your family, your 1st house, etc... It's not worth it and the only one who matters is YOU - you will have what you bring to yourself and you're the only one who can decide which kind of life you're going to have. Dream Big, Think Big!
Best Wishes,
Lynnae

Yes for special occassions etc. In WI it is 100% legal to drink under 21 if with a parent, married to someone 21+ etc. 16&17 yr olds are not children and treating them as young adults during these occassions goes along way in establishing a relationship that may help prevetn them from abusing alcohol etc. By the way they will drink if they so choose, it is a matter on whose terms?

well, a little bit on say special occasions doesn't hurt, but apart from that the age limit is 21 in america and 18 in the uk. Don't know about the rest of the world. Although funnily enough I know that you can be 16 in the uk to drink wine in a restaurant.

Depends on your culture, and how much.
I was brought up drinking a glass of red wine with dinner every night. It is supposidly good for the heart and for circulation.
As long as they are being monitored by a responsible adult, and they are not getting drunk, then why not.
You have a lesser chance of them becoming addicted if you dont make it seem like such a big deal.

you know what - we are not a drinking family, but on holidays or family gatherings, my daughters at one time or another asked, "oh can i taste that" and i might let them have a sip. But that's as far as I would go. But allowing them to join in a glass of wine with the adults, uh huh,no way. never ever never! there are things that you have to wait and earn the right to do. drinking is one of them.

No it's illegal and any adult who gives a person under the age of 21 beer or any other alcohol drink can get thrown in jail.

I'd say 'no', because it is illegal for anyone under the age of twenty-one to drink alcoholic beverages, but if you want to die in a drunk driving accident and let down your family and whatnot, go ahead. Your life.

From a legal standpoint, NO. But, if you're in your own home and your parents allow you to have a little glass with dinner or something, one glass isn't going to kill you.
