I've been thinking about getting a new laptop but it's only been 4 years since I got my old one. It's okay, but I would like a new one with more advanced features. Should I wait longer, or go ahead and get a new laptop?

It really doesn't matter whether you wait longer to get a new laptop or just go ahead and get a new one now. It's really your choice. Most people wait for their computer or laptop to show signs of problems and get a new one when it breaks or slows down or the performance of it just isn't as well as it used to be. If you have the money and everything, then the decision is entirely up to you. If you'd like, you can make a "pros and cons" list, listing all the pros and cons of your current laptop. It doesn't have to be a very lengthy list, just write down enough pros and cons about your laptop for you to get an idea of whether you want to or not get a new laptop. Hope this helps =).

The "life expediency" of a computer today is about 3 to 4 years. So I would probably be due for a new one. The main thing though is not age, but whether or not your present laptop is still able to do the things you need it to do. If not, then replace. If it you can use it longer, then do so. In another year you will get more computer for less money.

Hello Hollisterchick,

Your hardware choices should be driven by your software needs.

Do you want to have some software that needs some particular hardware? Common examples are video editing, gaming or "file sharing". A better video card, more RAM and larger hard drives are common upgrade needs depending on what you do.

Processors are pretty fast these days, and a faster one is probably reserved for things like gaming and video editing. And by "gaming" I don't mean solitaire but playing the latest processor intensive games.

So if your computer runs fine, it runs the software you need, you don't have any shortages of space, RAM, video processor speed and so on, then take your money and go on a cruise, or invest it. You don't need a new laptop or computer.

Why wait, some of the best things are on the market now.

And if your notebook is four years old, a new one will rock your world as far a speed goes.

Vista can be a little iffy, but for the most part it's playing well with hardware and software.

Sadly, the shelf life on laptops is between 3-5 years. So you could be justified in getting a new one.

Depends on the features you have and the ones you want. ?

technology changes by the week if not the day, so anytime is good.

And don't be scared of Vista, It has it's quirks, but it's going to leave XP in the dust! (with a service pack or 2).
