Only metaphorically, and you might wonder which words it might be worth. But consider: take any photograph you have and attempt to describe it completely and accurately so that someone who cannot see it would get all the significant information about it. Not easy, not at all. And you know that when you have a textbook and you are slogging through some dense explanations or descriptions, a single picture or diagram or even table or chart can make the difference between pass or fail on the exam.
A thousand may in fact be a conservative estimate.

That is a 'cliche' ... and when it comes to the difference between 'seeing something' material as opposed to 'describing it' then the 'picture' is worth MORE than 'a thousand words.'
BUT, if it is an 'emotional' (as opposed to material) thing, then I think that words, either written or spoken, are NECESSARY with no 'numbers' attached to them.

You can look at a picture and say a thousand things abt it... unless its a picture of a black or red or white wall... then its only worth one word... :-S going crack now.

I think it could be, but lets say you see a picture, and you think its pretty, you can think of another word thats the same as pretty, and but beautiful as well.
