I'm building a new PC but I'm afraid that it might use up a lot of electricity. Are there any hardware add-ons to help my PC use electricity more efficiently?

Actually I plan to have:

1) Core 2 Duo E6420 2.13GHz
2) Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS 256MB
3) 160GB HDD
4) Samsung 19" LCD
5) Asus P5N32-E SLI plus

Somebody told me at least 500watt. I don't really like that idea.

Use SATA drives over IDE, and also Vista has a new low power feature. This is preferable to turning the machine off if you are going to be away only for a few minutes to a couple hours. Also turn off your monitor when not in use. Do the research before building though, some really nice parts use less electricity than similar parts. Core 2 Duo for instance is more energy efficient than the Pentium D.

Do an Internet search for 80 plus program for a list of power supplies that are more efficient designs. 500 watts is going to be the bare minimum for your build. I am building a new system and my minimum is 750watts.

Not really, just use lower consumption components, so no high power video cards, only have 1 hard drive, and DVD drive.
Don't install masses of fans, use "passive heatsinks" where possible
Use an LCD monitor not a CRT

Hope that gives you a start

Wouldn't let power be an issue, computers don't consume that much, even when running 24/7. Build what you want.

When you aren't using it, turn it off. Set the OS to shut the harddrive off after X idle time, set the monitor to shut off after X time.
