It takes only a simple majority in the house but 2/3 vote in the senate.
I think the reason the Democrats aren't impeaching Bush is that they don't have any hope of getting the supermajority they need in the Senate to actually remove him from office. Without being able to remove him, the impeachment would mean nothing, it would look like just a political vendetta. President Clinton reached his highest level of popularity during his impeachment!
I think the Democrats see their best hope in investigating some of the things the Bush admin. has done. They've been doing pretty well so far! Every few days brings another new revelation of misdeeds in the Bush administration, and Bush's popularity continues to fall. Every day Bush stays in office he hurts the Republican party a little more.

Simple majority in the House to file a Bill of Impeachment (equivalent to an indictment).
2/3 Majority in the Senate to convict (basically, that's the trial).

What I want to know is the number of votes it takes, not the percentage or the majority. Does it take 60 votes to impeach a President, or what is the number?
