Well, I'm no expert but here are some suggestions:

1. Try drinking milk because it has a content that can calm you and, as such, quickens you to sleep.
2. Try listening to very light sentimental and instrumental music which could really calm your senses.
3. Try to take away any light source from your room, just like the airlines do when they want to induce you to sleep on long distance flights.
4. Try taking some alcoholic beverage before sleep if you are allowed to.
5. Try counting from 1 onwards until your mind is tired.
6. Try to exercise/workout in the evening so that your body system is tired and ready for a restful sleep.
7. Some people are wide awake after taking caffein-laden beverage before sleep. If you are one but loves such beverages, try to avoid taking them in the hours before bed time.

Hope these helps you sleep soundly and happily.

Its a shocker hey, from the dawn of man,we have had this problem hey.Millions of years ago, they were counting dinosaurs i bet, trying to get comfortable in a cave!
Maybe try and listen to the sounds around you instead of your thoughts, or if you dont like noise get some ear plugs matey.Hug your teddy bear or get an alarm clock that has timer function and listen to a boring overnite talkback radio!(someone suggested that before, clever idea so you dont wake up with radio shouting at u-i hate that!.)
Ive just started taking melatonin and herbal tea b/f sleeptime, nite shift wrecks my sweet slumber too-goodluck,max

My dr recommends taking Melatonin 3 mg, about 30 minutes before you want to sleep.
It is a natural occuring chemical your brain produces when the sun goes down. So it isn't harmful at all. I absolutely love it and there are no groggy side effects the next morning!
Also, avoid caffeine within 3-4 hours of bedtime.
Counting sheep is crap...doesn't work.

actually the best thing to do they say, is if you've been lying in bed for an amount of time and cant sleep...

apparently its best if you get up and outta bed, go downstairs, or study room, or wherever is outta the bedroom, and read a nice book or something and then go back to bed again after you feel yourself getting a little tired again

and vola!!

thats ment to help. .

or you could try pills, to help relax &/sleep. .

but i would try to avoid that one :)

If you haven't fallen asleep within thirty minutes of going to bed, get out of bed. Find a comfortable chair, and sit and read or meditate, drink a cup of sleepy time herbal tea, and stay calm and relaxed. Soon you will find yourself nodding off, and you can go to bed and go to sleep.
