I've never had one so I'm not sure what I should be looking for, but my main priority is being able to contact family when I'm away from home. I'll probably remain within a 500-mile radius of home, but that very likely includes parts of several states. It would be nice for a caller to be able to leave voice mail so I can listen to the message when I'm not busy. I don't need to be able to listen to music on the phone, but it would be nice to be able to take pictures in case I were in an accident, but if I have to have the music to get the camera, the company can keep both. It would be nice to have clear connections and good customer service, but I don't plan to be spending much time on it.

Any feedback is welcome. I know almost nothing about cell phones or plans, so even answers that some would consider annoyingly obvious are welcome.

If you get prepaid, the phone cost would often be more than with a contract. You could look into T-Mobile, Cingular, Net10, STS Mobile, Virgin, or TracFone. Most of their prepaid plans are less than $10/month if you buy a "year of service." (I.e. you buy a $100 refill card that lasts for a year from T-Mobile, Cingular, Net10, or Tracfone).

Basic camera phones are fairly cheap. Music or not, doesn't matter-- the prices are still low for the basic prepaid ones. Music doesn't a cost, per se. For example, a refurb. Pantech C120 is only $49. A new one is $89. I'm not sure if those do music, but they have a basic camera.

For plans, you could get a cheaper (or free) phone, but you're then looking at $30+ a month for service, plus fees and taxes. Sprint has some rather cheap plans. So does T-Mobile.

Also, depending on your area, Cricket Wireless or Jump Mobile might be offered in your state. Both are fairly cheap and offer no contract plans.

I have a Virgin Mobile phone and I am very happy with it. My plan is 18 cents/minute anytime. There are no monthly fees or contracts to deal with. Another great Virgin Mobile plan is 10 cents/minute with free nights and weekends for only $6.50 a month. Virgin Mobile phones are also very inexpensive. I just got a new Virgin Mobile flip phone last week for 20 bucks! I saw a camera phone for only $30! Go to the site below to learn more about Virgin Mobile.

I've had great luck with T-mobile. I have had all of the major carriers and the customer service at Sprint & Verizon were sub-par to say the least.

I would suggest going with AT&T or T-mobile depending upon the area you are in.

As far as phones go, Nokia and Motorola have the most user friendly interface. for a beginner, I would suggest the Motorola RAZR, it is very user friendly and has a decent camera on it.

A cingular go phone might be good for you. You can easily set up voice mail, there are lots of cool phones to choose from, and there's no contract. You can easily add minutes to your phone, and you can choose 1 of 2 plans that best accomidates you.
