It is a middle of the road processor for this day in age. It is not as fast as the Core 2 Duos, but it is dual core and is certainly faster than budget models like Semprons or Celerons. If you are on a budget it is a good choice.

You have to have software written for dual and 64-bit, so the advantage, with a 64-bit OS will be noticeable for video editing, LAN between computers and file downloads off the net. I've been very, very happy with an AMD Athlon 64-bit 3800+, but then, I run Linux 64-bit. I don't trust Win 64 OS, it can kick down to 32-bit emulation mode just whenever.

Short and specific to your question, such a machine would run best, in my opinion, as an XP (preferably 64-bit) or Linux, choice of 32-bit or 64-bit OS version. The laptop is a number-cruncher, not a gamer.

You know, if you are doing basic computing and enough RAM to back up that AMD. It will run just fine, there's no need to spend extra cash for Basic stuff......
