i think harry potter books are amazing, and that everyone should give them a try, but yes, it does come to a point where people are simply obsessed... obsessing over anything or escaping from reality with that thing is a bit unhealthy if you ask me. so yes, i agree to a point

I read other things, even though I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. I haven't reread the books in probably a year, and have read 2 other book series along with other stand-alone books (hard to find time for recreational reading while in school).
I don't think it's terrible that people escape by reading Harry Potter. Every book is an escape.
But, I would recommend those who read Harry Potter exclusively to branch out, especially now that the series is almost over... it's not good to reread the old - start something new!

Harry who? I'm a Harry Potter fan - love the books and the movies and am looking forward to Book 7, but not diehard - I mean I haven't re-read books and pick up many others (different genres), even getting ideas from comments I see on-line here.
I agree with another, reading most books is an escape - almost ANY type of book (at least in fiction). We also read to learn and explore.
It's not terrible so many love to read Harry Potter. If it's an obsession and it's messing up their daily lives, sure, there's a problem. There are also those addicted to video games, television programs, alcohol and drugs - so many ways to escape which are much worse for an individual's personal well-being.
I say "Read On!" That's what I'll be doing on July 21.
I'll agree the number of Harry Potter questions gets pretty old. It's funny because there are getting to be as many anti-Harry type questions as there are those from the fans. I skip quite a few, but I was curious about yours and the answers you were getting.

Reading IS a form of escape, just like watching tv and movies are. As someone who had a rough childhood, reading was probably the one thing that kept me from completely losing it. Harry Potter is one of those books that a reader can really escape into. I mean, the world is so magical and yet feels so real. While reading Harry Potter, it's hard to believe that it doesn't actually exist. But, I see that as a good thing.

Yes I'm currently reading book 3 in the wheel of time series by Robert Jordan
after that I'll be reading a book by Ian Irvine
Whats wrong with escaping reality for a little by reading Harry Potter (or any work of fiction)? Should we all read dull biographies about people we don't really give a damn about.
Reading is good for your mind!!!

No, it's not terrible. The book series gets people reading.
Reading any fiction book can be an escape for reality. But I don't use the series as an escape. I just have fun reading the books.
Harry Potter is what got me intersted in reading again. From there it's developed and I do read other books.

I love the HP series, and I've read every book, so far, several times. However, I find it a little insulting that people believe that because I read HP, my literary tastes don't include other books.
I happen to believe that all literature is escapist literature. Yes, even the classics. I have found myself "escaping" into the worlds of Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Tim O'Brien, Ernest Hemingway, Harper Lee, Ray Bradbury, James Joyce, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King, Emily Dickinson, Fanny Fern, and the list goes on. Every time I open a book, I'm transported away from the world I'm in into the world the author has created. There's nothing wrong with wanting to escape reality for a short period of time. Whether your escaping to a world of magic or to a world that is based in reality, your imagination is still invoked.
That is the purpose of books, to exercise your imagination, to strengthen your mind, to show you questions (not answers) that you might not have thought of before. Harry Potter, though "just a children's book," does that. In its pages you'll find questions of racism (in fact several "isms",) the nature of good and evil, growing up, relationships, and host of others that I would need to write an essay about to explain fully. Furthurmore, any reading helps to build vocabulary, strengthen spelling skills, and instill grammar.
HP is a wonderful series to many people, and, just like any other book, or series of books, is not for everyone. I'm sure I would not enjoy some of what you like to read; however, the difference between us is that I would not judge you because of your taste in books. (This is something else that people learn from HP.)

There's nothing wrong with people reading and loving the Harry Potter series. It is not terrible. The series has gotten hundreds of thousands of people to start reading again. That's not terrible; that's brilliant.
And yes, I do read other books too. I absolutely love pretty much anything written by Ted Dekker. I also love reading Stephen King novels. George Orwell is another one of my favourite authors. H.G. Welles is up on top of my favourite authors list, too.
