Go to www.crucial.com and use the auto scanner that is located on that site. There will be an info bar that will pop up at the top of your browser window asking if you want to allow the activex control, click that bar, and choose to accept and install the control. After a brief moment of scanning, you will get a report of how much RAM you have, what kind of RAM you have, how many slots for RAM you have open for expansion, suggestions of configurations, as well as a few offers for RAM at the bottom. It is a pretty nice site =)

RAM is an internal hardware component, found inside the PC's case.
To find out how much is installed with a Windows XP operating system:
Right Click on the My Computer icon
Click properties
Under the General tab, you will see the total MB of ram installed as "xxxMB of RAM" near the bottom.
If it's less that 512 (or close to that number), you should consider more. You may want to consider having a technician upgrade it for you though as you would not want to ruin your motherboard or memory sticks.

you will know if you need more ram as your PC will be slow and things will error frequently (plus you will have a low amount) below 512MB
And you can't just get any old ram
once you know how much ram you have (if below 512 then you need more) open up the side of your PC case
look for a long rectangular green stick and on this there will be a sticker read the information on this and use that information to purchase more ram
