See if you can find your little quake on the map.

P.S.: If you live near the Mississippi River, within 500 miles of Memphis, you should review your plans and preparations for the next big New Madrid quake. It looks like the fault is waking up.

Is it an earthquake or the end of the world?..
Earthquakes are a natural part of the way Earth works. Without them the planet would be stagnant and motionless, like Mars. There would probably not be life here.

Earthquakes happen all the time. There are some places where they occur many times a day but a too light to be felt other than with a seismograph. (Magnitude 0 - 2)

Larger earthquakes happen on every continent and can often be felt many miles away from the origin. Two glasses rattling together would be about a magnitude 3 - 4 quake. Quakes of this size might give you a queasy feeling, rattle your dishes or knock objects off of shelves.

Magnitude 5 - 6 cause much great earth movement and can crack walls and bridges. Some buildings might even collapse.

The largest earthquakes. like the Sumatra quake in 2004 (Mag 9.0), happen along huge faults and can do a lot of destruction over a large area. While a large area may be affected, it is still regional but not even close to ending the world.

Loss of cities and life will depend on the development of the area involved. A magnitude 7.0 in San Francisco will kill more people than a 9.0 in the middle of the ocean.

Movies use the extremes to draw viewers. The reason films are called science fiction is because they use science ideas and then stretch those ideas until they are fiction.

umm, i wouldn't worry about the end of the world, at least not yet. many places experience minor earthquakes everyday and most people don't even feel them. chances are a big truck went down the road and the slight vibrations of this caused the glasses to shake.
if you are truely worried about the end of the world, then find out how to become green (in product use) because at the moment, the increse of greenhouse gasses is whats going to kill us.

Looks like you had an earthquake of a magnitude between 4.0 and 4.9. From this site:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale

There are 6,200 of those every year. So, I wouldn't exactly worry about the world coming to an end.

The first thing I have noted in a feable earth quake is the motion of the lamps which were oscillating on the ceiling

I wouldn't worry about it if it was a small tremor. These happen all over the globe - including in Oklahoma (where I live).

The Earth has got to move sometime.
