Steve Irwin, his programmes were great, travveling the world to find animals and stuff. It came as quite a shock when I woke up and heard he'd been killed by a stingray.

Princess Diana
What amazed me is what a shock it was to me.
I still have her in my dreams on a regular basis.
I think of her much more after her death than I paid attention while she was alive.
MLK & JFK
What's the name of the FBI guy who was in charge of the hunt for bin Laden ... he was in the Twin Towers on 9/11 ... losing hime did A LOT of damage to us in the War on Terrorism.
Your definition of celebrity may vary with mine
9/11 was a shock to me but not a surprise.
There was stuff from WW II that was a shock to me when I read about it decades later.
* e.g. Pearl Harbor could have been avoided ... there was intelligence warnings that it was about to happen, but US leadership wrote that off as science fiction they would not believe in
Federal Building in Oklahoma City was both a shock and a surprise to me ... it was the first major terrorist attack inside USA in my life time, where the chaos was so obvious.
9/11 was a shock to me but not a surprise
Various Churches being fire bombed during the Civil Rights Movement was a shock to me, although it should not have been a surprise. It was a shock & surprise to me when it started up again a few years ago & the FBI take forever (years) to figure out who dun it.
Shock to me that the FBI still not figured out who done the Anthrax attacks.
Twin Towers # 1 didn't register with me at the time as a major event, since the nation had a long history in violence with ordinary truck bombs and hand delivered explosives ... I did not know about the cyanide at the time.
Bush firing AG's was a shock to me,
one was investigating first assassination of a US attorney
several were investigating government corruption
A big surprise to me was when the President ordered the Attorney General to fire the Special Prosecutor, who resigned instead, so the President ordered the next guy down in the hierarchy to do it, and he resigned instead

Anna Nicole Smith. Yes, I know she wasn't a Princess Diana or anything but I felt terrible for the pain she had to go through at the end of her life.
