I love The River Runs Salt, Runs Sweet by Jasmina Dervisevic-Cesic. Some people have called her the Bosnian Anne Frank, but the difference is that Jasmina survived the war. (Actually, there was a terrible book, Zlata's Diary, that was also said to be like Anne Frank's diary, but it was really just the diary of an ordinary kid who happened to be in a war zone).
Jasmina is 15 and falling in love for the first time at the beginning of the book, and as her attraction to Suljo becomes something more mature, her country falls apart and the national army turns on the country's own people. Jasmina's losses are terrible, but what I love about the book is that in spite of what she suffers, she ends up being so strong and optimistic. She also doesn't fall into the trap of wanting revenge. She's my hero!
It's not a romance novel. It's a true story with a bit of romance and a lot of people doing the best they can in a terrible situation.
The book is available on Amazon, but hard to find in stores.

Try the Gaslight Mysteries by Victoria Thompson. The first one is Murder on Astor Place. There are 9 in the series so far I think that they are really good. They take place at the turn of the century in New York when Teddy Roosevelt was a Police Commisioner. The main characters are a midwife from a prominent family and an Irish police detective.

I think a really great series to read are the ones by Janet Evanovich. This is the first series I ahve ever read and I am totally hooked. It's about a woman who becomes a bounty hunter and is not really all that good at it but she gets the job done. A really colorful group of characters, suspenseful, scary, and a really easy read. start with the first book called,
One For The Money, it's the Stehpanie Plum series. I ahve read quite a few these in just a couple days I can't put them down. Hope you give this a read!

I'm reading Anna Karenina by Tolstoy... its the longest book you've ever seen, but it manages to keep my interest.. so much so that im 3/4 the way through (can't wait to see how it ends). Its written kinda like those movies where you get a little piece of everyone's life and they all connect in the end (crash, pulp fiction, etc). This book is suppose to be the best novel ever written... i dont know about that, but its pretty good!

The Stand by Stephen King, actually anything by SK really. Im reading Cell, kinda a rip off of the Stand but just as creepy.
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, best book ever IMO. Very hard to follow but worth it in the end.
The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald. Classic. Youve probably read it.
A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving. Great book, great ending.
The Metamorphoses by Ovid. Intresting, some love but alot of mythology which is amazing.
Go for the classics; Aeneid, Iliad, Odyssey, all timeless all epic.
Good luck!

James Patterson... best author ever!!! Read the Cross books... they are full of suspense! I honestly went through one in about 2 hours because I couldn't put it down... He's a suspense writer with a detective... murders... and just a bunch of crazy stuff... I have to agree with the romance novels... WEAK!!! but Harry?! come on now... that's some good reading...

Oh, please read the NY Times bestseller, "A New Earth", by Eckhart Tolle. It's not perfect, what book is, but some passages are. Of course I expect a full book report or at least an opinion. I think it will change your life or better yet give you a higher consciousness, the one for the twenty first cenutry. You can't even get his latest book.

Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut is a sci-fi book, it's a bit bizarre but I enjoyed it.
Also the Rag and Bone shop by Robert Cormier is amazing.
