WHO? The people or masses did in 1918:

In 1918 Gandhi led organized protests and strikes against the landlords, who with the guidance of the British government, signed an agreement granting the poor farmers of the region more compensation and control over farming, and cancellation of revenue hikes and its collection until the famine ended. It was during this agitation, that Gandhi was addressed by the people as Bapu (Father) and Mahatma (Great Soul).

Mahatma is Sanskrit for "Great Soul" (महात्मा mahātmā: महा mahā (great) + आत्मं or आत्मन ātman [soul]); it is similar in usage to the modern christian term saint. This epithet is commonly applied to prominent people like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Jyotirao Phule. Many sources, such as Dutta and Robinson's Rabindranath Tagore: An Anthology, state that Rabindranath Tagore first accorded Gandhi this title. Others state that the title "Mahatma" was first accorded to Gandhi on January 21, 1915 by Nautamlal Bhagavanji Mehta at Kamribai School in Jetpur, India.

Gandiji was called mahatma by Pandit Jawal Raha Nehru.

Gandiji was not the person due to whom India became a Democratic Country.

After second world war, India become unproductive for English people. So they left India. They left not only India but also they left many other countries like Australia, South Africa, etc.

So it does not go to the hands of M G.

So I think stop saying the name of Gandhi. I am not against you. But I am against Gandhi's follower at present mainly Congress in India.

Thats all

I DONT..y..cause i think he was an oppurtunitist playing with the lives of people ...agreed noble though his intention were i dont think he deserves the title of MAHATMA..

if it werent for him n his pupil NEHRU..there wouldnt be problems for india in the form of pakistan n bangladesh..

there wouldnt have been violence in form of assasination of Indira Gandhi..

one more point i wud like to make is that the present congress leader is given as "gandhi" in te media...while its actually "gandi" name of the caste indira/rajiv belong...otherwise it make them blood relatives of GANDHI..

and they speak about buying his letters..while the first ever rocket fired by the TIGER of india TIPPU SULTAN against the brits lies for exhibition in an museum in LONDON

i know the above is not the answer to the question but my heart aches every time i am forced to say gandhi as mahatma because of marks i receive

He had earned it from no less a person than Rabindranath Tagore, India's most well-known writer, the title of Mahatma, or 'Great Soul'. ..for his opposition to repressive legislation (known as the "Rowlatt Acts") in 1919.

i may have hurt the hearts of fellow indians..but this is my observation n i am a patriot first..if my death brings joy to this land i would gladly give it...

From the word maha-atman, "great self":

an honorific title (meaning something like "a great soul") bestowed on particularly meritorious individuals, such as Gandhi

It is considered to be the highest principle in man and a great sage.
