Ivy is poisonous is this correct ? And is it ok for them to eat general "weeds"

Have a six month old lop eared bunny who eats most of the garden weeds with no effect but have seen some ivy poking through the fence ?

Yes, Ivy is EXTREMELY poisonous and bad for rabbits. Don't let your bunny anywhere near it. If you catch her eating it, or notice a bit missing, take her to the vet immediately, get an emergency appointment. Chop out anything poking through the fence, I'd recommend digging it up if you can so it dosen't grow back under the fence.

As for garden weeds, most are safe for rabbits, but there are a few that aren't good. Leaves from most trees are a bad idea. Here are a few weeds that I feed to my own bunnies and that are perfectly safe

Grass
Dandelion (leaves and flowers)
Plantain (all varieties)
Hogweed (NOT the giant version)
Mayweed
Dead-nettle
Chickweed
Twigs from apple, birch, willow and ash trees.

Some people feed clover to rabbits, but my vet advises against it as he said it can cause some bleeding diseases. There are other plants that are good to eat, these are just the ones that I regularly feed my bunnies and know are safe. Certain plants are good for rabbits in small quantites or under certain conditions, for example Sorrel is good for rabbits but only as an occasional treat, and Comfrey has to wilt before rabbits can eat it. I have these in my garden but don't feed them just to be safe!

If there's anything you're not sure about, I would check with your vet to be sure. Many a time I have looked like a plonker carrying some weed into a vet's practise, but better safe than sorry. Wild rabbits stay away from things that are poisonous, but unfortunately domestic ones don't have that much sense! Dig up anything that looks suspect. Also bear in mind that as your bunny gets bigger he/she will dig, and possibly dig things up that aren't edible.

Anyway, I'll shut up, good luck with your bunny!

Since it is a young bunny, clip the ivy poking through.

Most weeds are just greens for rabbits, but not dandelions, dandelions are health food for rabbits.

rabbits eat most weeds i wouldn't leave no ivy hanging round just in case, but rabbits are very clever they don't eat nothing that's bad for them.......

I wouldn't worry too much. They are unlikely to eat anything that would harm them - they manage to survive in the wild where there are lots of poisonous plants around!
