I am already a pool lifeguard and would eventually like to become beach-certified, but i dont know exactly what goes into it.

most beach test are extremely rigorous. my test in Long Beach, CA was a 1 mile ocean swim in February with no wet suit. (about 57 degree water) needless to say, i was cold for about a week afterward. then a series of "pier swims" or "run-swim-runs" which test your agility. they are highly competitive, and designed to weed weaker applicants out. only after you "make the cut" will you get an actual interview.
for the most part, you need no formal training. every beach that i have worked for couldn't care less how long you have been a pool guard, or that you have any certification at all. they will train you, and it's severe. in some places you are under the same division as harbor patrol, fire department, or even police department. in some places, sergeants are swore peace officers and even carry side arms.
bottom line, it's intense. be ready, be warned.

Check with the station you'd like to join. Every beach has different requirements and tests. Give them a call and ask for a spec sheet.

life guards are awsome and have the best tans.
you have to know how to swim with a 400 pound human in your arm whom is kicking and screaming. Master that and your doing great.
