I have a 1982/1983 vintage 470. I just replaced the points and condenser and rotor cap. She fires up with a nice rev, but within 1 to 2 seconds, she cuts out. Is this an ignition problem or is it a fuel problem?

Little facts on my 470:

Last year I got hit with the Ethenol / Phase separation. I have a new carb, and fuel pump.

I put 20 gallons a fresh fuel in my 25 gal tank about 2 weeks ago.

The ignition coil is about 15 years old, but I guess it works.

It could be the coil. They will at times when they get old and start to go bad put out just enough juice to start the engine and then bleed down fast and not produce enough juice to keep the engine running. Do you have any low oil pressure sensors or temp sensors with a safety feature that will kill the engine in case of over heat or low oil pressure? If so you might check those suspects as well. But the coil could very well be your problem and is a fairly inexpensive fix. Good Luck

You say that you have checked the fuel lines and they are ok,but did you remove the anti-syphon valve and check it?They are a big problem on all boats. They become stuck with crap and will not open.Another thing to check is the pick-up in the tank some of them have a screen filter on the end and it may be plugged. If I remember correctly there is also a filter on the fuel pump itself.Once you have done all this, remove the fuel line at the carb and have someone crank over the engine. If you do not have any fuel pumping now then your fuel pump is no good and will need to be replaced.Hope this helps and good luck.

Above are some good answers.
First put some Carburetor cleaner in the fuel tank and run it. Sometimes there be some moisture in the tank and cause it to cut out. Adding more fuel does not remove the moisture, carb cleaner does, it mix with the water and burns it out.

did it do this before you replaced the ignition parts? if not check the points for correct gap and make sure they are free of oil or lint(the best way to clean points after gapping them is to draw a folded- over piece of paper through them several times try it and you will be amased at what the paper looks like) also check the condenser. check that the points are tightened down correctly. remember new parts can fail too. new doesnt mean good. please give more info does it run or just spit and pop sounds like ign to me

Check the ballast resistor as it starts on 12 volts than changes to 7=9 volts when you let go of the key. It's about 3" long an white in color .wire on each end follow back from the coil.Check with volt meter. Hope this helps
