Well, life is spread out so unevenly because the dimensions of space are HUGE! Imagine, from the perspective of an ant, how far the cities of Chicago and Los Angelese are. We see in our version of size, including the earth, which is only 24,000 miles around the middle. It's a drop of water in the ocean.
Once we begin to find life in other places, like Europa, the moon of Jupiter, we'll start bridging the massive gap that is space. And life won't seem so far away.

At this point we have no idea what the distribution of life is in the universe. In fact, we don't even know if there is life other than us in our *solar system*. Life is a possibility on Mars, Europa, and Titan, but we don't know for sure.
As for the larger universe, we still don't know. Stars tend to be far away from each other, so that limits where life can be. But, once again, we have no information whether life is common or rare in our galaxy, let alone in other galaxies. Rember that the Earth is incredibly small on the scale of our solar system and our solar system is miniscule on the scale of our galaxy. And our galaxy is one of hunders of billions that we know about.

As far as we know, there IS no life on other planets.
That's not to say that it doesn't exist at all - it's just that we don't know about it. The closest we can say is that a meteorite from Mars shows what might be signs of life, but even that is disputed. Until we get there, or until we get a message from someone out there, we simply won't know.
