There are grants for minority business owners, such as those involved in transportation related contracts emanating from Department of Transportation - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

However, if you are looking for grants to start a for profit business, then that's going to be tougher. There are a number of loan programs available for women and minority business owners, plus certification programs that will allow you to compete better in the government contracting process.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants -- even if you are a woman or a minority owned business. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/mostrequesteditems/CON_FAQ2.html

-------------------------------------------------------------
"The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments."
-------------------------------------------------------------

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business -- THERE'S NONE.

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

There are essentially only 3 sources for grants.

Federal grants are called Small Business Innovation Research grants. These are given primarily for some new innovation. You can find out what's available at www.sbirworld.com. There is also info on this site about how to apply.

Some cities offer grants to small businesses if they will locate in the downtown area, for the purposes of building up downtown traffic. Check with City Hall.

Finally, private foundations offer grants. You can get a list of most US Foundations and private grant sources at www.foundations.org/grantmakers.html.

Well it would help to know what kind of business it is that you want to start but besides that......

I just got finished posing an entry to my grants blog

http://grantbasics101.blogspot.com

about a new grant program that was just signed into law this year! It is a state grant program that is open for women, minorities and those that are disabled to apply. Why was the grant program started? To help people achieve the American Dream - that is what the sponsors of the grant program said. How much is the grant award? $50,000! How much has been allocated for the grant awards? Over 2 Million Dollars! What does that mean? That means that there will be more than one grant award. Guessed how this grant award was financed? By the state's tax dollars. A good use of the state's tax dollars don't cha think?

There are also grant programs that are on a federal level meaning that people from all 50 states can apply.

There are also entrepreneurial-type grant programs for those that want to start their own business.

A few days ago I got an email from someone who was looking for a grant program to help finance the producing of his CD and I had to tell him that a very popular gospel artist (award-winning artist) got 5 grants!

Now the first thing you should do is check your state's website to see if they have any grant programs that you're eligible to apply for. One of the major reasons cited for individual states having their own grant programs for those that want to start their own business is because it helps the state. More businesses mean more jobs and more jobs help bring up the economic atmosphere of the state and make it better.

So first check with your stat'es website to see what they have going on.

And again it would help to know what kind of business it is that you want to start because depending on the kind of business it is that you want to start you could be eligible for other kinds of grant programs.

If you're still not completely recovered, an online job might be a good choice. You can change the job/add to it later. I saw on the news that some folks have taken to blogging for profit. Sounds a little strange, and it might be a hard job to start. Not to mention continue for a good length of time. Who (else) knows? Have you seen the LinkedIn website? You could join there and discuss this same thing with other people.

Amit, Imisidro gave you a great answer...I would suggest that you research as much as possible within SBA.

It wouldn't hurt to make an appointment with your local SBA office - I believe they are located throughout the US.

Community colleges also host seminars on small business start ups, etc.
