I am looking to buy a radar detector, around $500-$600. And it has 360 degree search and search all police cars with good range. My friend has Escort Passport 8500 but I have seen it some time don't detect cops. Does anyone know the best police detector outhere?

I personally like the Valentine One detector. It has the capability to detect multiple radars and will show you the direction that they are from you. This could be a handy feature if there are several cop units in a close area. Check them out on their web site. good luck.

I assume you mean a 'radar jammer.' Radar jammers are illegal to use in every US state, Canada, Mexico, most of Europe, New Zealand and Australia. So-called passive radar jammers made by some companies DO NOT WORK. They have been tested repeatedly and failed to 'jam' ANY police radar at ANY distance. Contrary to a previous post, most police still use radar, not laser, for a variety of reasons including the cost of police laser guns and the unreliability of police laser guns in imperfect weather (rain, wind, dust). So what are your options, assuming that you may someday go above the speed limit? 1. Purchase a high-end radar detector to detect police radar before they detect you. The best radar detectors can detect police radar up to 10+ miles from the speed trap and provide very few false alarms. If you live where the use of radar detectors is frowned upon, you should consider purchasing the only radar detector that is invisible to police radar detector detectors (RDD): the Beltronics STi Driver (or STi Remote). Or better yet, look into an integrated radar detector and/or laser jammer system that is completely hidden from sight. - and/or - 2. Purchase a laser jammer to detect and jam police laser until you can check your speed. Unlike radar jammers, which are illegal to use in every state and most of the rest of the world, laser jammers are legal in almost every state and most foreign countries. If the police are using laser, a 'laser detector' isn't enough, since once the laser is detected they have your speed and it's too late. The ONLY effective measure against police laser is a laser jammer. (or 3. Never speed.)

There really isn't one anymore since most police jurisdictions are trading-in their radar guns for laser, which contrary to all the advertising can't be easily detected unless the laser it pointed almost directly at the detector, and by then... it's too late, you've been nailed.

Why's this? Because 1) laser is on/off. 2) the police officer aims it at a reflective point on your car, like the headlight or license plate. 3) Laser has very little beam spread compared to radar. For instance, with radar the beam spreads almost the full width of a four lane road within just 100 yards or so, so the detector can pick it up from quite a ways away as the officer radars other cars before you. Laser on the other hand spreads only a couple of inches, so if it's aimed at your headlight your laser detector on the dash won't even pick it up. And since it has to be aimed directly at the car who's speed is being measured and is on/off in use, the officer doesn't even pull the trigger on the laser gun until he has you in plain sight.

So in my opinion (and the writers of all the tests in auto magazines I've seen recently) laser detectors are a waste of money and very few police departments are still using radar on a wide scale. Which is probably why your friend's radar detector many times doesn't pick-up the officer working a stretch of road.

The best detector is a CB radio tuned to channel 19, and/or an alert driver. Escort makes a good product, but NO radar detector is 100%. Whatever product you decide on should also have laser detection.
It's a detector, not a protector.

www.valentine1.com

Valentine1 is by far the best radar/laser detector made. Worth every penny. Other than that, don't speed!

I haven't got a ticket since using the Rocky Mountain Phantom one, with police radar interference (since 1998). ~
About $300. and a under hood installable one is available. Also protects against LADAR.
