When I start my computer it gets to the window screen and freezes up. can't shut it down can't do anything. Anyone have any Ideas. And just for further knowledge I am by no means computer literate. I can barely turn the thing on. Thanks

First, make sure that your hard drive or drives are plugged in. I.E., open the case, remove the cables, (both power and data) and plug them back in. Now try to boot. If the system now sees the drive or drives, then all is well, if not try the following:

Put your XP disk into your CD drive and restart your system. This will start the XP installation process. When you come to the screen that asks if you want to install XP or if you would like to “Repair” XP, choose Repair. This will open the repair console command prompt. At the prompt, type: chkdsk /r. (There is a space between the k and the /. Now hit “Enter”. The repair should now start. Allow it to run until it stops. This can take some time, so be patient.

If all goes well, XP will replace any and all missing operating system files.

That sounds like your BIOS is screwed up or your PC is infected by a very nasty virus. Try reformatting your hard drive (this will erase EVERYTHING that is stored on your hard rive). If you got a Windows XP cd put it in your drive and restart your PC. Then press F5 - F11 to go to the BIOS (it's different for some PC's). Then go to the advanced BIOS tab and just look around for something called the boot sequence. There should be four. Choose for number one your cd rom drive with the Windows XP cd in it. Then save and exit your BIOS. The Windows XP Reformat\Installation program should open automatically. Then just CAREFULLY follow the steps on your screen and when you're finished doing a reformat everything should work fine again!!!

It sounds like you have a major software corruption or a major hardware failure.

The first thing to do would be to insert your Windows disk, reboot the PC and try the recovery option. If that doesn't work, you'll need to install Windows from your disk.

it could also be a corrupted boot sector. try booting into safe mode and see if you're able to do a soft system restore to a previous date.
