I know a guy who is like that. And who knows, by all accounts we could be talking about the same person, no? LOL
My friend is a great person, and we all love him to death. We can't wait until he comes into to town because he's a blast to go out with. BUT, it's really annoying as well because not only does he know everyone everywhere, but he continues to try and make friends while he's there. By the time we end up leaving somewhere, he's made friends with the entire bar. It hard to get any REAL time with him.
Maybe people like that are in a constant state of anxiety about people finding out that they're not that interesting. Having someone not like them would pain them so they act like they can be everyones friend. You have only a few true friends. There is no way that anyone could give the emotional output of friendship to more than a few people. They would die of exhaustion.

No way, 1 person can't have 900 friends, friendships take time & effort & you wouldn't have enough time for that many. What are you --bored?

no one can have that many actual friends acquaintances yes.. but friends no.
a friend is someone you can talk to about anything, and can go to for a favor...
just because you know 900 people doesn't mean they are your friends.
you'll only have a few true friends in life.

It means that he has a loose definition of the word "friend". Some people toss it about much too casually. One is indeed lucky if he has one true friend. Most people do not have any, but they imagine that they do, until the chips are down.

It means his definition of friendship is probably a bit loose by usual standards.

Most likely, they aren't very close to most of them. Prehaps the use some of them. Or, they're popular, so everybody just wants to be their 'friend.'

It means that they are extremely social/outgoing, that it is important to them to have a lot of friends and possibly that they are afraid to be alone?
