There can be a series of problems causing this. I assume this is not a window unit but some of the problems apply to window and to central units.

Make sure the water drain is not cloged and water (condensate actually) is draining off. Make sure air filters are clean. Make sure the compressor unit is clean and has good air flow.

Is the evaporator unit freezing up? If so, you have more than sufficient cooling capacity, and the evaporator may be dirty or the air flow through it is too small. If this has just appeared now and not before and the outside conditions are not severe or abnormal for your area, you probably have an air flow problem. Make sure filters are cleaned and air flow is ok.

You may also have a unit that is too big for your house. Often people want to oversize the unit and this is a consequence.

Clearly there are a number of variables that can cause the problem. Check out the obvious. If you are stuck at that point, consult a service company, tell them what you did, and then pay for them to check out other variables.

It sounds like it needs to be replaced, basically there is a liquid that runs through the AC in order to supercool the air quickly after a few years or so the liquid will lose it's ability to cool and in that case the AC should be replaced.

It sounds like it needs to be serviced. A little Freon will go long way. If it is a centrial ac unit this will help, if it is a cheeper window unit, just go to Walmart and get a new one.
