AC Compressor kicks on, pressure gauge drops very low compressor kicks off, pressure rapidly rises (which should be normal when AC is off).? I'm thinking it just needs some 134A added - any other ideas?

This is a church member's car so I don't know how long the vehicle has been blowing hot air - it sounds like quite a long time. Unfortunately, taking it to a shop is not a financial possibility - it sounds like like the majority says add refrigerant which was my first thought as well. It seems like worst case the refrigerant leaks out again which frankly doesn't change their situation at all. I guess we'll start there and see what happens...

The reason your AC system cycles fast is in fact due to it being low on refrigerant causing the low pressure switch at the accumulator to shut down the compressor to avoid damage. Since just adding R134A to it is a really bad idea and I doubt you have access to the equipment to properly charge and leak test the system I would recommend that you find a competent professional to do the work for you.

It might be a good idea to take the car in for servicing and have the mechanic run some leak detect thought it. The leak detect will indicate the area of leakage if there is one then that could be fixed. If no leak is found then I would have the R134A added. Might have them evacuate the system and refill as opposed to just topping off the refrigerant

I had the same problem with a '94 Taurus. The electric fan wasn't coming on when the compressor came on. I found out that no fan=no cold air.
If you're not having this problem, it's likely that you are losing your refrigerant and need to find the leak. It might be worth calling a pro in this case.
Good luck.

the reason i always say take it to a pro is if u fill it up with 134 it will leak out ....just like it did the first time...so u waste 134 ,,time....money and still end up at the shop

you need gas and possibly need to double check the compressor. it could be overheating and kicking off.

I'd have it filled with 134-A before I did anything else.
