Take your cue from Clean Sweep on TLC. I love that show. Start with one large pile with everything from a couple of rooms. Sort into Trash, Sell, and Keep. Resort the keep pile when you think you are done and try to cut it down by half.
Also, check out FlyLady's webpage. www.flylady.net She has many useful tips for decluttering. Best of all, she's free! Of course, she advises to donate instead of sell, but since you are planning a yard sale, anyway, might as well make a profit from all your hard work.
Best of luck to you and your daughters family.

What I would do, is I would go through the stuff and say, "do I really use this that much?" If the answer is no, I put it in my yard sale pile. Also, the other person had a good strategy about the prices and just putting offers on most of the stuff. A tip for clothing that I have found works quite well is to pile it neatly by size and type and people will have a much easier time finding it. I would also recomend if you have a pda to get a yard sale organization program that will help you track sales. I use Yard Sale from freewarepalm.com. They also have a Freeware for pocket pc website, but I forgot the url. Good luck!

Watch "Clean House" the tv show. They have awesome ideas on garage sales. My suggestion would be to try and group like items for the garage sale. It seems to get the stuff really moving. Also, from personal experience, if you can display any clothes where people can see what's there without digging through a box, etc. I don't even waste my time if it's not out on "display". Advertise and get some balloons to get people's attention, too. If you are in the direct sun the whole time, maybe you can borrow or rent tents or something.

One room at a time.
If it's also unorganized, I would suggest moving things to the room where they belong as you go. That way, when the movers pack, the stuff can go where it belongs. When it's time to unpack, she'll already have a head start on organizing.
Make sure you advertise the sale--especially if she doesn't live on a busy road.
Listen to music while you work. Makes it much easier.

We usually price our items low, so they will sell. Otherwise you get stuck with all your old stuff. Also clean things off or dust them, make them look as best you can. Anything you havent used in a year should be in the sale. Anything that doesnt sell, you can take to the Goodwill; they will give you a receipt to write your donations off on your taxes.

I can suggest this. 3 big boxes.
1 , I love this so I will keep it.
2 This has no value, and off no use to anyone, so throw it out. 3 Keep it and sell it in your yard sale or give it to a charity shop.

When selling the junk, don't bother to price it. Most people want to argue the price down anyway, so I just let them make me an offer. I'm surprised at how often they offer more than I would have charged.
