I agree with all the above posters that Shane is generally considered a boy's name.
However, there is one notable female Shane to be aware of. Namely Shane Barbi of the Barbi twins fame.
Perhaps the people thinking you are a girl are big fans of the Barbi twins.
Or maybe there's another reason they think you are a girl unrelated to your name.

Well, I'm a girl, and my name is Shane, and I'm pretty feminine... I've never met another girl named Shane. I'd have to say that it can be both masculine or feminine, depending on who has it!

Really i have only met girl shanes but to me i alway have thought of a boy when i hear the name. BTW: people should not assume your gay because of your name because you did not choose it and you had nothing to do with picking it out. Also if you were gay, would it really make a difference, shane is a very strong powerful name. If people think you are a girl, just let it roll off your shoulder and remember it is not your fault that thier so dumb!

I think it's a masculine name.. There is a cowboy movie named Shane after the main character... I think the name is some variation of the name Sean, and I know Sean is a masculine name.. just look at Sir Sean Connery :)

Are you kidding? Around here Shane is a common boys name. Shaina would be a girls name, and I've heard of Shawn as a girls name (I have no clue why, though), but Shane is most definitely masculine where I come from!

There is a famous book called "Shane" in which Shane is a man. It was also made into a movie (1950's). Most people who read the book in middle school (like me) or saw the movie would think Shane is a boy's name.

I think it should be a guy's name. I dated a Shane (a guy) and I think it is a very masculine name. I have heard it for a girl before and don't really like it, prefer Shayna instead.

hmm. i don't know. If I saw a guy that wasn't gay with it I'd think of it as masculin for the rest of my life, but if I first met a guy that was kinda girly with that name I'd think of it as feminine. Here's the thing: shape your name to who you are don't let your name shape you and after people have met Masculine Shane, they'll think of it as masculine. Funny I didn't even know shane was a either or name. Hmm. I've onnly met guy shanes. lol. I do think either or names are often used more on girls so they are thought of as girly, but lots of guys at my church have either or names and at first I thought of them as girls names, now I don't.

Definately as far as I know - this is a masculine name. Don't know any girls called Shane, only boys (quite a few at that).

Shane is usually a boy's name and Shayna is a girl's name. But I think Shane or Shayne or Shaine could be used for a girl. Just think about names like Aubrey, Shelby and Jordan . . . those were all boy names once upon a time, and now they are more common for girls. Though Jordon is like Terry and Pat . . . about the same for boys and girls.
