What would you do in this situation?

Lets say you’ve been friends with someone online for several years. You both have a lot in common and like talking to each other. However your friend wants start talking on the phone but you don’t. This causes a lot tension and your friend tells you that if you don’t talk to them on the phone they won’t talk to you ever again. Your friend wants to be closer to you and feels that not making the next step to talk on the phone means you don’t really care about being their friend. You have told your friend that it would make you very uncomfortable to do that and that you just want to email each other but they seem to not listen to you. What would you say to your friend?

hmm..

well ive been on the internet 12 years. i speak on the phone with friends ive met on the net as well as visited many of them... however i do have a few friends that dont want to speak on the phone for one reason or another.. those few i respect their wishes and we just talk online.

if your friend feels that you are not close just because you dont talk online im sorry hun *hugs* i guess in your case i woulld just state that again that you feel uncomfortable with talking to them in any fashion other than the internet, tell them that its just a policy you have with everyone from the net. apologize that they feel like you dont want to be their friend but remind them that you do, and ultimately state that yuo understand if they want to end the relationship, but would be sorry if they do.

thats about all that you can do.
good luck dear

I don't consider relationships done strictly by IMs and e-mails true friendships anyway, no matter how long they have lasted. Only people who interact by truely knowing each other through human contact can be made a friend. All others are casual acquaintences or just considered "pen pals". It seems you are using correct precautions if this person keeps giving you the impression they only want to continue if it has to go a step farther. Don't trust them--trust your instincts.

I've been friends with this girl from Finland for over 2 yrs. I have never heard her voice bec she told me from the very start that she's very shy so she'd rather email or write letters. I tried to understand that but because I liked her as a friend. But we don't communicate all that much anymore. For me there was something lacking to make it a real friendship maybe it was hearing her voice atleast since we're really not going to meet face to face because we live oceans apart.

I can understand how your 'internet friend' might be hurt thinking you have a closer relationship than you really do. If you are not interested in having a closer relationship than you state that and move on. And if they don't want to email you anymore, well, that is their choice and you have to take that consequence.

Why don't you give it a try? It may seem awkward at first but you'll get more comfortable talking to him on the phone in no time since you seem to get along well with him on chat.

I would establish the line. He/she thinks your friendship needs to progress. You need to clarify exactly what you're looking to get from this friendship: Just an online friend? Or would you actually meet someday? He/she seems to think the latter...
