if you want to, go ahead - of course it's going to hurt (it's a piercing) but it's not hugely painful, and as long as you follow these, it should be fine:
- don't get it pierced with a gun at a mall, get it pierced with a needle at a professional piercers (this will reduce the infection likelihood, as guns aren't sterile, and should heal faster as there's less trauma from the needle than the gun)
- keep it clean and don't play with it when it's healing (use things like salt water, not chemical antibacterials - too strong on a newly pierced ear)
- keep it in unchanged for 8 weeks, and try and keep an earring in for the next few months

My daughter did it, and ended up in the hospital emergency room with cartilage so infected they had to anesthetize her to get the embedded earring out. The problem is, the upper part of the ear has very little circulation, it's mostly cartilage, which is soft bone. So you're piercing through bone, and if it gets infected, which is common, there's no blood circulation to help cleanse the area. I am so against this I cannot tell you. If you must wear jewelry there how about an ear cuff?

I think it looks good on some people, but it hurts like hell and if it gets infected it is much worse than if your earlobe does.
My friend had it done on her upper left ear and it looked cool for a while until it got all bloodied and some kind of pus started leaking out of it. Now it just looks manky.

i agree, i think it looks good on some people. i actually have 2 on my cartilidge on my right ear. the only suggestion that i have is to get it on the side that you tend to use less, ie talking on the phone, sleeping, etc. it hurts for a while, but once the initial is over, you will be fine!
