VW dealer recommended it as standard maintenance, but wanted a lot $$$ to do it. I have no problems with brakes, so is it really important? I'm thinkng I'll just wait until the brakes need replacing and that'll take care of it. BTW, the car is 3 years old.

Well it is important but, if there is no corrosion or leaks I would wait until I service the breaks then change it.

On VW's it is recommedned to flush the brake fluid every 24 months. Brake fluid attracts water. Water contamination lowers the boiling point of the fluid, which can lead to brake fade. Water also corrodes brake components like Master Cylinders and Brake Calipers. VW's are already notoriously prone to expensive rear brake caliper failure.

In other words, get it done. It's cheaper than replacing expensive hydraulic components.

OK,.. here goes: DOT 3 fluid takes a certain amount of heat before it starts to become caustic to the rubber seals....this the most commonly used fluid in AUTOMOTIVE applications. DOT 4 takes a higher heat rating.. this is the vast majority of motorcycle bake fluids. Extreme high performance applications take DOT 5... this would be in Lamborghini's , etc.... "wet calipers"?? the answer bart gave is extreeemly foolish.
