My husband just told me that he has used the toilet plunger to unclog the drains in the bathroom sink and bathtub. He did not disinfect either one after doing it (and since I didn't know about it, neither did I), but now his position is that it's fine if I disinfect the sink and tub afterwards. I think it's pretty gross either way. Who's right?

Since you can never completely disinfect the plunger, it would be best to disinfect the sink afterwards. Separate plungers would not solve the problem, because a backed up sink has as many germs as a toilet.

Just use Clorox Cleanup, or straight bleach.

Another case of "husband's right again" !

I would say that's pretty gross, yes the plunger should've been disinfected before using in the sink.

Most people believe that the toilet seat is the most contaminated site in the home; however this is just not true. Believe it or not, sinks have been found to have a higher bacterial count than any other surface in the home. This is because sinks tend to stay moist — a prerequisite for bacterial growth — and often contain plenty of microscopic organic matter (skin flakes, body oils and other tiny bits of "food") for bacteria to eat.

What else would you do, disinfect them before plunging. Better late than never don't you think. Next time try disinfecting the plunger before using it. The sink and tub should be disinfected any time water backs up in them.

EWWWWW but there's no going back now. Disinfect after-the-fact, and get a small plunger for just the sink. I'm a girl, so of course hubby's wrong. ;)

Neither of you are RIGHT or WRONG, go with what you believe. If the issue is one of a LARGER issue, then the $3 for disinfectant, plus the brief time it takes, plus the thought that disinfect is just precautionary not OCD; needs to be re-thought.

You are both right, it is pretty gross, but you can easily clean the sink with disinfectant etc.
