Some people can't sleep when it's quiet because their minds race and they can't calm themselves down. Sometimes for these people it is easier to have some type of noise or activity going on to ease their own tensions. By listening to the tv or reading a book, they keep their minds busy on other things, which makes it easier to fall asleep. This can also make it harder to fall asleep naturally, or when it's quiet, and then becomes a learned behavior.

I have been doing it since I was in 4th grade because I was taken off a drug that was for seizures and developed insomnia. I had no idea at the time what caused it and would ly awake until 3 or 4 in the morning. My brain wouldn't stop. Well my parents were very proactive and put a tv in my room. I had no trouble falling asleep at a reasonable hour anymore after that. I am now 57 and still do the same thing. But I usually turn the tv off and listen to the radio now, and it still works.

I sleep with a blue party light on, and no noise. But thunderstorm Cd's with just the storm sounds and no music is nice.
Some people have nightmares, some people are sound sleepers, some are light sleepers.
Wake up to a ghost looking at you, pinch yourself and it is still their...and you may never be the same. I'm still creeped out by the experience.

I do because I like noise in the background so it's either a TV or a fan; I can't sleep in pure silence for some reason...

My wife is like that. She has to have the tv on to fall asleep. She tells me that when she was little she had a bad fear of the dark, so I guess that's where it started. I like to have white noise in the background like music or nature sounds. We've learned to compromise so we can both sleep.

I started doing this to cover my husbands snoring. Now I'm just use to sleeping with it on.
