"Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon"
I wonder if the motto is more than just a bit of advice. What if Hogwarts is a kind of "sleeping dragon" that you should never, ever mess with? What if the motto is a warning for people to leave the ancient magic of Hogwarts alone, because once awakened it can be dangerous and fierce?
I wonder also if there is a real dragon, and not a metaphoric one? There is a dragon on the cover of the US special edition of Deathly Hallows...
If you want to hear some fan theories about that school motto, check out episode 100 of PotterCast, a Harry Potter podcast about theories and discussions.

Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon.
It's kind of like the saying Let Sleeping Dogs Lie.
