I am looking for an approximate statistic on how many computer users know at least the basics of programming. If anyone has a link to such a statistic, that would be awesome (and get a best answer).

But I just want to see how many of you know the basics of programming. More details would be helpful to, like what programming language, if you took a class, and why you learned it.

Lots of scripting languages and probably a dozen programming languages. Basic, C, Perl, Python. learned in the military (they dont teach you, they just tell you to learn it). The basics of programming? Yeah Im pretty sure I have that down. I can look at the code of most languages and edit in some changes or small fixes. Not familiar enough to write something major from scratch, but enough to read my way thru the code and find some simple fix. Id call that a good general programming basics background.

One interesting thing when this question pops up. Even though most of them will leave it off their lists, any programmer who is actually doing something these days probably started with basic.

I am a programmer so yes. I learned it on my own around age 13 (to write music software) and currently work in the finance industry.

I know VB.NET and Java and JavaScript mostly. I don't know if you would include SQL and HTML under the rubric of programming languages but I know those also. I can learn whatever other language/technology I need pretty quickly so I don't bother studying the latest technologies anymore.

In my experience, the best coders are often self taught and real life experience is the most important thing in developing advanced techniques. Its more like playing piano than practicing law.

Hello Lowa

Visual Basic for Application (VBA... Microsoft office)
VB6
CC++ (Early object course)... this is the only programming course I have ever taken in my life, other than the regular class in the college where they "teach" DOS.. ja!
Learning VB (2005)
Learning SQL 2000 and 2005
Learning Macromedia (MX)

I learned all the above on my own

Took several programming classes in college back in the day when you had to program a computer in order to use it. Mostly Basic, also took one COBOL class.

I took a class in college on Visual Basic, I hated it, I use very basic stuff for icons and buttons on web pages, but that is about it. My industry doesn't really require it for my position.

I learned the original BASIC, C+, Pascal, Cobol, and Fortran, so obviously I am starting to show my age.

After pascal I got sick and had to quit my studies. Maybe I'm just to old for this any more. The first desk top carried my name and my sister-in-law put together the first palm computer (not design, just assemble)

I was an IT major, and my brother that's 6 years older taught me basic when I was pretty young. School & home is where I learned.
